Varicocele
Varicocele – Advanced Treatment for Improved Comfort & Fertility
Overview
A varicocele is an enlargement of the veins within the scrotum (the pampiniform plexus) caused by faulty valves that prevent normal blood flow. It is similar to varicose veins in the legs and is a common cause of reduced sperm production and quality, which can lead to infertility in men.
While some varicoceles are painless and found during routine exams, others may cause discomfort, testicular shrinkage, or fertility problems. Surgical repair (varicocelectomy) is the most effective way to treat significant varicoceles and improve testicular health.
When to Seek Treatment
You may need varicocele treatment if you experience:
Dull, aching pain in the scrotum that worsens after standing or physical activity
Noticeable enlarged veins that feel like a “bag of worms”
Testicular shrinkage (atrophy)
Difficulty conceiving due to low sperm count or poor motility
Discomfort or heaviness in the scrotum
Benefits of Varicocele Surgery
Improved sperm production and motility in many cases
Relief from scrotal pain and heaviness
Prevention of further testicular damage
Outpatient or day-care procedure with quick recovery
Minimal scarring with microsurgical or laparoscopic techniques
How the Procedure Works
Anesthesia: Local, spinal, or general anesthesia is given.
Access to Veins: Depending on the technique, the surgeon makes a small incision in the groin or abdomen.
Ligation of Veins: Enlarged veins are tied or sealed to redirect blood flow to healthy veins.
Closure: Incisions are closed with sutures or surgical glue.
We offer multiple approaches including microsurgical varicocelectomy, laparoscopic varicocelectomy, and embolization (a non-surgical radiology technique).
Preparation Before Surgery
Avoid eating or drinking for 6–8 hours before the procedure
Stop blood-thinning medications if advised by your doctor

Wear supportive underwear for comfort
Avoid heavy exercise, cycling, or sexual activity for 2–4 weeks
Follow-up visit to assess healing and semen quality improvement
